Hanging clothes out to dry seems to be the national pastime in Portugal, both in cities and rural villages. Jack McConnell can’t resist shooting these clothes lines, and they become an important component of his photo compositions.
After awhile, they become something of a metaphor for the openness of Portugal society. Whether fishing, farming or running errands up and down hillsides carrying some kind of load on their heads, people seem to live a good part of their lives outdoors in the sun, in the presence of neighbors and friends.
